We Tried HeyGen So You Don't Have To
HeyGen has real scale behind it - 100,000+ teams, a G2 'Fastest-Growing Product' badge, a 4.8 rating from nearly 1,900 reviewers. But it's built for everything from corporate training to sales outreach. We tested it specifically for fast, scroll-stopping UGC ad content to see if it's the right tool for that one job.

Honest Review of HeyGen

Pros
Real scale and recognition - 100,000+ teams, a 4.8 rating on G2, and a 2025 'Fastest-Growing Product' award.
Genuinely broad use case, covering corporate training, sales outreach, localization, and marketing.
Strong language coverage with 175+ languages, plus voice cloning and lip-sync.
A real free tier - 3 videos per month, no card required.

Cons
Built for everything, optimized for nothing specific - you end up paying for and navigating a platform designed for other jobs.
The free plan is genuinely limited: a 1-minute cap and just 3 videos per month.
Real user reports of the AI not following instructions - wrong music or visuals - with credits lost fixing the mistakes.
A real gap between its G2 score (4.8) and its Trustpilot score (3.6, rated 'Average').

HeyGen Creator
Starter Plan
HeyGen doesn't publish a fixed credits-per-video rate - cost scales with video length, resolution, and avatar, so the real per-video price is hard to pin down. Its Creator plan gives you 600 credits/month for up to 30-minute, 1080p videos across 175+ languages and 500+ avatars, which is a lot of horsepower if you actually need long-form, general-purpose video. Tagshop's Starter plan is built specifically for short-form ad content: ~5 finished videos/month at $19/mo, 1080p, 75+ languages, 300+ avatars, no watermark - sized for UGC ads, not everything else.
HeyGen Reviews: What Users Actually Report
Heygen App Difficult to use. Unauthorised charges, I paid for one off project, however two months later when I checked my account Heygen were debiting unauthorised large amounts from my bank account and this carried on to other months... I would not RECOMMEND.
HeyGen... basically makes up 80% of the content. It makes loads of mistakes, which you end up paying for in credits... it always uses the same music in everything you do; it doesn't matter if you ask for different music... I've lost an absolute fortune in credits due to HeyGen's constant errors.
More Reasons Why You Need a Switch
If you haven't made up your mind, it is okay. You only have half of the information; the other half lies with us. This will help you make up your mind:

HeyGen shows a 4.8 rating on G2 but only 3.6 ('Average') on Trustpilot from 2,432 reviewers - a gap worth understanding before you commit.

Verified reviewers report unauthorized and continued charges after a project ended - a recurring theme worth checking before you enter payment details.

Just 3 videos per month with a 1-minute cap makes it hard to judge whether HeyGen can actually handle real ad-length UGC content.

Training, sales, and localization tools become dead weight in your subscription if all you need is fast, scroll-stopping ad content.
